When we are required to gauge just how much force to use we rely on proprioception.  indeed it is the guaging of force that identifies proprioception to us.  Most of the time we use this overlooked sense without any consideration at all.  When however we find the door not responding to our initial push, or as we reach gingerly for a glass of water by the bed in the dark we become aware at last of proprioception.  It tends to reveal itself nervously, as if saying "you dont know what you are doing" because "you" don't, you dont need to most of the time, your body takes care of it for you.  Squeeze and scrunch, stretch and press, measured pressure and controlled manipulation help develop that easy relationship between body and sense.
