Proprioception, our ‘secret sixth sense’, is unique in that it is a feedback system based entirely on sensations from within our own bodies – hence ‘proprio’, one’s own, perception. Information from receptors deep in muscles, joints and skin not only give us a sense of our body’s position, orientation and movement but also guides those muscles to resist forces, or exert our own. When we are required to gauge just how much force to use we rely on proprioception. Squeeze and scrunch, stretch and press, measured pressure and controlled manipulation improves our body-awareness, co-ordination, stability and balance.
